Removing moss from your paving and driveway can be a daunting task, but it’s not impossible. There are a few different methods you can try, depending on the severity of the moss problem. Landscapers at Green Acres said: “If the conditions are right, moss can grow anywhere. The spores are always present in the air; so as long as there’s sufficient light, moisture, and nutrition, moss will grow and thrive. Moss can cover almost any surface on your property, including the lawn, roof, walls, driveway, sidewalk, and deck.” Cold Sterilising Tablets

As an alternative to specialist moss-removing solutions, the experts suggested using bleach. However, they recommended using it “carefully” to avoid it staining pavements.

They said: “Bleach is the best solution to remove slippery moss from driveways. You just need to make sure you use the chemical carefully because it can stain the pavement or kill the surrounding plants.”

To use this method, mix about 20 ounces of bleach with five gallons of water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle or garden sprayer.

They recommended letting the bleach sit for “15 minutes before you wash it away with warm water”. This is so that the bleach has enough time to soak into the moss.

Oven doors can get just as grimy and greasy as the rest of the appliance, especially when "stubborn" brown stains start to form. Cleaning enthusiasts have shared their top tips on how to best clean oven doors.

The experts added: “The moss should die and become yellow in a few hours. At this point, it will be very easy to remove with a broom or brush.”

Bleach is a staple in most households, but for those who don’t own a bottle they can purchase it for 42p at Asda or 60p at Sainsbury’s.

For those who are not keen on using bleach, there are other ways to remove moss that are inexpensive and will get the job done.

Paving experts at North East Paving and Gardens noted that baking soda is “the best way” to remove moss from driveways.

They said: “Baking soda is one of the most effective natural options for removing algae and moss. It works by increasing the PH level; moss prefers to grow at a PH level of about five to six and will die if it goes much above that.

“Most homes will have this handy solution available, so it’s often one of the most cost-effective methods for moss removal in gardens.”

Apply the baking soda to the affected area and allow it to work into the moss for a few hours. It’s best to do this on a dry day, as the experts warned that any moisture present in damp areas can “prevent the baking soda from working as an efficient moss killer”.

White vinegar is also recommended by the professionals to remove moss from paving. They said: “Vinegar is a fantastic alternative to a chemical treatment for concrete driveways and a cost-effective and simple moss killer can easily be made at home.

To carry this method out, mix equal parts vinegar and warm water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle or garden sprayer for easy application to your concrete driveway.

Spray any offending moss, algae and weeds. Leave the solution to work for a few hours before removing the dead moss and weeds with a push broom or by hand with rubber gloves.

The paving gurus warned: “Be careful not to spray other plants in the area, as the vinegar will work to dry out and kill any plant life it comes into contact with.”

Rather than choosing bleach as their “best option”, the paving gurus advised using sodium percarbonate to remove moss from paving, especially from driveways.

They said: “Sodium percarbonate is the best solution to remove moss from the driveway. This free-flowing powder is made of hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate and can be bought in bags up to 25kg.

“You will require 40g of sodium percarbonate per square metre. For example, if your drive is 15m x 3m, you will need approximately 1.8kg of powder.”

They explained that sodium percarbonate needs water for “the magic to happen”, so sprinkle it on the surface before rain is forecast or dampen it with a hose.

The experts added: “The granules dissolve, creating lots of oxygen that penetrate the crevices and cracks, killing the rhizoids and preventing regrowth. It doesn’t smell and is eco-friendly.”
