moormann celebrates ten years of the 'pressed chair' made of a single thin aluminium sheet

nils holger moormann celebrates ten years of its ‘pressed chair‘, a stable seating made out of a single razor-thin aluminium sheet. the idea of producing a durable chair from a flat piece of metal, the complex production process and the resulting iconic design, still inspires after all this time. and although the path towards actually constructing the chair proved to be quite strenuous, it seems that it was well worth it in the end.

moormann celebrates ten years of the 'pressed chair' made of a single thin aluminium sheet

as moormann (find more here) shares, moulding a durable chair out of a thin sheet of aluminium was a fascinating idea from the outset. but as is well known, something as simple as it looks is often easier said than done. after countless forming trials, diverse bead depth experiments, broken pressing tools, ripped sheets of aluminium and various rounds of prototype models, technical inspection association company TÜV rhineland gave its official seal of approval after a 1.5-year development phase.

no rivets, screws, hooks or eyelets are needed to make the pressed chair – an aluminium sheet is simply pressed into shape. first, the contour is cut from a 2.5 mm thin piece of aluminium. in the second step, the circumferential curvatures and indentations are pressed into the material at a manufacturer of car chassis. and then the legs and backrest are moulded to the correct angle. the chair’s outstanding stability and characteristic appearance are owed to this unique construction. the jubilee year is celebrated with a homage to eleven unconventional custom-made models, which demonstrate just how flexibly the iconic piece can be used. whether the ski hill, skate park or swimming pool: the pressed chair always makes a fine impression and is the ideal companion.
